Cole Barnett Interiors films new show "Scrubbing In" on MTV- Living Room & Dining Room Remodel

 'Scrubbing In' follows a group of travel nurses assigned to work at an Orange County, CA hospital for 12 weeks. Relocating from across the country, these nurses have left their hometowns and lives behind for short-term hospital contracts, with the added benefit of exploring a new city. For Tyrice, Chris and Fernando, this isn't their first tour and they're considered experts of the program. For first-timers Adrian, Chelsey, Michelle, Crystal, Nikki and Heather, this is a new journey they're embarking on together, looking for a change from their previous nursing jobs. (from MTV.com)

So how does an Orange County interior designer end up on a show about nurses?  One of the caste members, Nikki, has recently graduated from interior design school.  After years as a nurse, she's contemplating making the jump into a career as an interior designer.  Her reasons for this are something that I'm sure will be explored on the MTV show.  Ultimately she would like to focus on healthcare design but, being so new to the industry, she's open to any and all design related experiences.

Nikki came to intern for Cole Barnett Interiors for the day and help with an install I was working on in south Orange County.  I thought it was a perfect day for her to see the real-world side of design that is never taught in a classroom.  The fun stuff that some interns call the grunt work...like placing furniture, building furniture, cleaning floors and windows, and cutting off tags.  I can always use an extra set of hands so I was thrilled to have Nikki along for the day.

Living Room Remodel- Gray Walls, Neutral Furniture, and Blue Accents

 This living room presented a few challenges that were remedied with large-scale artwork, a neutral pallet, cozy textures, and functional pieces of furniture.

 A large and bright painting directs the eye toward the fireplace focal point rather than up to the asymmetrical windows.

 A round mirror is used to balance out the empty space to the right of the window and create a more balanced room.

The window seat benches are light enough to move into the backyard or in front of the fireplace when guests come over.

 The double coffee tables can be pushed together to create one large table or be pulled apart to serve as side tables or individual diner tables.

The next step?  Installing fabric roman shades in a neutral tone.  When the shades are up it will make the space even MORE cozy.

 The inexpensive blue stools add a pop of color and are also multi-functional.

 The previous homeowner had the sofa pushed up against the windows.  It is always best to float furniture in a room.  The window is too far away from the entertainment unit and it created a room that felt awkward and cold.  By floating the sofa it is more intimate and you get the added bonus of extra seating below the window.

 A mix of textures creates a well designed room.

 This sofa table seems to be made for this sofa.  It has a shallow depth but a long enough length.  A sofa table should always cover at least 75% of the space.  You can go with a height that touches just below the sofa, like in this case, or you can go even lower (think coffee table height). 

 What to do with high windows that are asymmetrical?  The low height of the window apron was also a challenge.  I try to avoid blocking windows.

Design challenge! 

This client initially hired me to design his new office space (in the works).  He moved into a new home on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and we spent a few dizzying days getting the space ready so that he could host his family and friends.  We met for the first time on a Friday, I space planned on Saturday, shopped Sunday, and installed on Monday and Tuesday. 

We have three gorgeous chandeliers that will be hung in the dining room and entry living room and we didn't have time to hang the curtains.

The client was clearly on a tight timeline but, they were also on a tight budget. Even though we are waiting on photographs of the finished space, I am still loving the improvements. 

I really like seeing the "Before and After" interior design photos.  You can really see how color can change a space.  We actually added more furniture to make the space feel larger.  It seems counter-intuitive but it made the space feel more balanced and therefore, it feels larger.  I also really like to place large artwork on the wall to open the space up.
